In the year 2000, scientists at Yale University began exploring a specific psychedelic substance’s potential for helping people with treatment resistant depression. They discovered that by administering sub-anesthetic doses thereof, depressive symptoms were rapidly and significantly reduced. These findings were described by Thomas Insel, former head of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) as ‘the most important breakthrough in antidepressant treatment in fifty years.’ (Read more here: The Science And Benefits Of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy)
The difference between traditional therapy & psychedelic-assisted therapy
To gain insight into the contrast between Traditional Therapy and Psychedelic-assisted Therapy (PAT), envision the mind being like a block of clay. Through conventional therapy, new patterns and dynamics are crafted by chiselling away at the hard clay, though this can be a difficult and timely process, particularly when experiencing psychologically debilitating symptoms.
PAT, however, takes advantage of the psychedelic effect to heat the clay, thus making it easier to mould, shape, and modify patterns and dynamics to promote healing at a faster rate. It is important to recognise that while psychedelic treatments can have incredible healing effects, they are not a ‘silver bullet’ (an instant or guaranteed solution).
Rather, the true benefits come from when the infusions are used as an adjunct to changing thought patterns, relationship dynamics, lifestyle and limiting negative behaviours. Insights without meaningful action don’t always lead to sustainable changes.

How to access safe, legal psychedelic-assisted therapy in South Africa
Many medical facilities in South Africa are starting to leverage psychedelic substances in the treatment of mental health concerns. At present, few offer programs that pair treatment with thorough preparation and post-infusion integration therapy; which is where more sustainable change can be achieved, according to recent research.
Equanimity’s compassionate, experienced healthcare team tailors our Psychedelic-assisted Therapy program to meet individual mental health needs, while promoting healing and wellbeing.
We recognise that this type of treatment program may not be helpful or suited to all people, and advocate for the responsible and ethical use of any treatment methodology.
Clients can, thus, expect:
- a physical health screening with a medical doctor;
- a psychological health screening, preparation, & intention setting with a psychologist;
- infusion packages, administered & monitored by our expert clinical team, to suit each individual’s personal health needs, desired outcomes, and budget; and
- an integration therapy session with a psychologist after every infusion.
Each aspect of our holistic programme is tailored to enhance safety and care for our clients and to help clients integrate newfound insights into long-lasting adaptive changes in cognitive, behavioural, and relational patterns.
